Herbert Spencer [1820-1903], a philosopher,
postulated that reality, everything, the fundamentals
of science, etc., all fall into five categories.
(1) Time.
(2) Force.
(3) Action.
(4) Space.
(5) Matter.
Herbert Spencer died two years before Einstein published
the first of his science papers....Mr. Spencer's theory stands
up pretty well, even well over 104 years later.
What about energy, you may ask?
Einstein answered part of that question: Matter and energy
are interchangeable...Two sides of the same coin, if you wish.
Mr. Spencer also knew that "work" (mechanical energy)
can be considered as "force" applied over a distance in
"space". And "action" is the working of "force" on "matter"
in "space"....
Mr. Spencer almost described the idea that "we" are
dwelling in "space" on a lump of "matter" that we call Earth.
Earth can be considered a spaceship....a very large spherical
spaceship....
I think somebody hit upon this idea of Spaceship Earth
years ago if I'm not mistaken.
cheers.
