Animation

I've watched part of a show called "Walking With Dinosaurs" on TV when visiting Ma Bowser at "The Home". The other folks seem to like to sleep through that as much as anything.

The animation is absolutely incredible. Almost completely believable. No stick figures these.

How do they do that - the varied backgrounds, moving clouds and water, scales sliding, blood dripping, dirt clods falling as one of 'em digs a hole?

It really doesn't look as if any reasonable amount of computing power and memory would be enough. I mean, I'm sure it is, but what kind of software is there that can do this?
