The famous Malin "before and after" images of recent
water-carved gullies on the sides of large martian craters
is both interesting and perplexing.
(1) Liquid water shouldn't exist on Mars today!
(2) The air pressure is too low!
(3) It's too cold! Liquid water would flash-freeze
even before it got near the surface!
(4) Potential permafrost, hundreds if not thousands of meters
deep on Mars, would hinder formation of liquid water
and freeze any liquid water nearby!
Is there room for Occam's Razor in the face of these known objections?
ANSWER: Yes! There are some clues that allow for an interesting theory
to explain away these objections.
(1) Those recent water gullies on Mars are on the sides of "large craters."
(2) Mars has a crust and a relatively "hot mantle" tens of kilometers below the surface,
much as earth does...But admitttedly the martian mantle-crust ratio is different
from that on earth.
(3) Those large craters on Mars require large impactors that "may have" created
crustal fractures on Mars down to the mantle in addition to the craters they gouged out.
(4) Geologists now know that the upper layers of the hot mantle [and the magma associated with it] on this
world is rich in superheated/superpressurized water mixed in with it....Martian magma
and the martian mantle should also have heated water mixed in it in abundance.
(5) From time-to-time, superheated steam from deep below the martian surface, from its
hot mantle, should worm its way through those fracture cracks, below and off to the
sides of those large martian craters, and cooling sufficiently to liquify before erupting
out the sides of those craters.
(6) A torrent of liquid water, meters deep, wouldn't "all" instantly flash-freeze or sublimate
upon emerging into the thin martian air. THe upper layers of the water, centimeters deep,
would indeed flash-freeze in seconds, but the overbearing pressure of the water itself
and the ice, plus the kinetic energy of the gushing water, would keep the
underlaying layers of H2O liquid long enough [10's of seconds, or over a minute or two] to carve a new gully on the sides of those craters.
I hope this theory explains away all the known objections.
cheers.

A theory to post on those "mysterious" martian water gullies.
