re: NEOs for water

"Hi gb

There's good evidence that a lot of NEOs are actually dead comets which very probably are composed of dust-coated ice - needs a lot less rocket fuel to get ice from there than from Mars or the Moon, plus no bothersome diurnal cycle to mess up your solar power supplies."

But the advantage of the Moon and/or Mars is that it can be a common destination. Meaning one could sell your rocket fuel or water at the Moon and or if mined on Mars to anyone going to Mars. For instance with the Moon, you could have tourists who go to the Moon. There could interest in building a radio telescope on the Moon. You could have interest in making solar panel on the Moon- these panels could used on the lunar suface, in Earth L-points or shipped to GEO.
Lunar water or rocket fuel could used to get to Mars- if the fuel is cheap enough or one is willing to pay the higher cost. One could get to Mars in 4 or even 3 months using chemical fuel, or if using nuclear engines, one could get hydrogen propellent from the Moon.
There is also a lot of Hydrogen in the Lunar regolith [12 billion tonnes of H2 in first meter of entire surface of the Moon]. And if you had rocket fuel market at the Moon, such large scale operations needed to mine this H2 and other elements [including He and He3] could be feasible. Another project which could make economic sense with enough traffic and lower cost are Mag Lev type propulsion systems [what I call [incorrectly] mass drivers]- unlike Earth where one needs say 8 km per sec for orbital speed and one has an atmosphere to deal with, on the Moon one needs about 2 km/sec to gain orbit or escape. Therefore one could somewhat easily get stuff off the Moon without using any rockets and with very little energy cost- shipping anything off the moon could drop below $1 per lb. At that point Lunar water/rocket fuel could easily be sold in LEO for far less than is possible to ship from Earth- and course one has cheaper fuel to use to get to Mars- if you are in a hurry.

As far NEO are concerned, I'm thinking small NEO's with low delta-v relative to Earth or even Mars, Venus, or Mercury could be pushed to these planets and material from them harvested in/near the planetary system [but mainly I'm thinking of Earth and specifically Earth's L-points]. After the industry of harvesting these NEOs develops and there no NEOs left which are at a low delta-v relative to the Planets, then they traveling to the various NEO and Asteroid Belt objects and mining them at their orbit with sending back refined product [water, Iron, or whatever] could be more common.

NEOs could useful simply because of their mass. For instance as an anchor for a space elevator. And if enough mass even their gravity could useful in regards to space elevator.
NEO around earth space could also act as a common destination- hotel or house could dock to NEOs- and even very slight gravity could be somewhat useful- I mean if for instance you drop something, you could find it on the floor- and other things perhaps more important.
