Genetic programming will be a huge field in the coming decades.
Within 20 years genetic code will be designed and written as easily as computer code is today. The continuing increase in computing power and simulator accuracy will allow new species to be designed and have their entire life cycle tested for flaws before they are actually created. Viruses and simple bacteria are just the beginning, but the ultimate goal is a redesigned and perfected Humanity.
