I suspect this technique may also be using that trick so that there are actually far MORE panchromatic sensors than colour-filtered ones...

Unfortunately, the Mercury News, which has great graphics in its newspaper, refuses to put most of them online. The article in the actual hardcopy newspaper was accompanied by a diagram that showed the pattern.
Fortunately, Kodak's site had them.
