Your other posts on this thread bear you out. Must have gotten my wires crossed when you started mentioning 1000 mile altitudes, however you did clearly state:
I suppose some day somebody could jump off the side of a space elevator, and reach terminal velocities that would require real heat shielding before you hit sensible atmosphere
