I was trying to do that and it got so cumbersome, I decided my book would be Fantasy, not SF. I love fantasy. You can do anything the imagination can conceive.

Actually, that isn't easy, either, because you have to have enough believability as a basis that readers can then suspend their disbelief at some point. Can't have a planet made of jello. Unless it's cartoon fantasy, of course. Then you can have galaxy-wide food fights.
