Let's forget for a moment whether or not we should make drugs illegal. Forget whether or not drugs actually cause petty and organized crime, political corruption, medical and social problems, overwhelm the justice system, or are a public health menace, or are expensive to control, or get people killed.
The point is, we have tried to outlaw drugs and we have failed, miserably, and we still have all those problems, in fact, they are getting worse. They are getting worse because illegal drugs are profitable to market. So as long as they remain illegal we cannot stop them. It's not like we haven't tried.
If we take away the money incentive, the problem goes away except for a small group of addicts we can treat, or at least identify, isolate and monitor. It's a no-brainer.
The drug biz is one free market that could not exist if the marketed commodity were available legally and cheaply.
