Space/Science » in reply to Forest Fire Leads to Ancient Meteorite Discovery

I look forward to the results of the study

I toured Sudbury (above and below the surface) with a very respectable geologist who made a persuasive case for a volcanic origin for the Sudbury Basin and its associated metal deposits. I'd do a great diservice to his arguement to try and paraphrase it without digging out my notes. Not saying I was convinced....

The linked article was lacking in any real geologic detail, so I'm now eagerly awaiting publication of the details: stratigraphy, lithology, thinsections, isotopes, major, minor, and rare-earth-element assays... the usual stuff. If the research pans out, it'd be the final straw for the volcanic model.

Nothing like a forest fire to expose things to discovery, serendipity in disaster. Worked in an area of Arizona where the brush was so thick it was maddening. Desert my ass! Had to create shin guards with layers of duct tape or lacerate my lower legs traversing a few hundred feet. I know I must have walked right past information packed outcrops hidden in the maze of vegitation. Part of the property had burned a few years back and that part was easy to map and sample. To bad it was not on the mineralized trend.
