I remember the eclipse of 1991 over Hawaii was supposed to be optimum conditions, as the weather for July 11th was always good. However on the day of the eclipse it was cloudy and rainy. I was lucky to be stuck in Kona without a car under probably the only clear skies over the whole island and got a good, though not perfect, view. My brother who was able to get a car, drove just to the south of me and was completely clouded out, My daughter who was in Hilo was under a pouring rain, and saw nothing except a dark sky.
You can never depend on what are supposed to be normal conditions.
