According to theory, Humans and all of our family branches came out of Africa. Lots of evidence supports this, but there are problems. Monkeys exist in Asia and the Americas These areas have been out of geographic contact with each other for many millions of years, yet the common characteristics between old world and new world monkeys are very strong.
The orangutan, a great ape family member, somehow found its thousands of miles from Africa to live in SE Asia. If the orangutan's origins are also from Africa, like all other apes, then those origins stretch back many many millions of years ago. It makes me wonder if one great ape could evolve in isolation from the rest, then why can't the same be true for different Human populations?
Some very interesting information on the man of the forest.
