I think you have to buy it to get the real-time ad scanning functions. I noted that they've moved to the "licensing fee" mode now like other similar programs. Certain amount of money per year to maintain updates.
For some software, this works pretty well. An annual fee to AutoDesk for 3DS gives you lots of neat support functions and services, and free upgrades to new versions when they come out.
