In the midst of all the hoopla regarding Iran supplying weapons to insurgents, it would seem worthwhile to investigate how American supplied weapons are undoubtedly being used to kill US troops.
"Losing track of guns, losing track of Iraq?"
"As the Pentagon is accused by US auditors of losing track of 190,000 AK-47 assault rifles and pistols given to the Iraqi security forces, the BBC's Nick Childs considers what this means for US strategy."
"PENTAGON'S MISSING HARDWARE
AK-47 rifles: 110,000
Pistols: 80,000
Body armour pieces: 135,000
Helmets: 115,000"
"Iraq Can Handle Security, Premier Says. But Maliki Acknowledges That His Forces Need More Troops, Training, Weapons."
"More weapons", eh? And more "training". Awesome.
In the meantime, the surge is demonstrating anew that overwhelming military superiority can control a population as long as that overwhelming military superiority is maintained. Only a fool calls that "winning" or "victory", as once the military clamps are removed, the situation reverts to it's old shapes.
Now, the US could control Iraq if it were willing to put a million or so troops in there and keep 'em forever. But, absent that, everyone agrees a military solution is not possible, even while pinning hopes on the military "surge".
Go figure.
