Serendipity and the night sky

I recently purchased an older 28 foot sailboat. This last week I finally made a cruise into the northern San Juans.

Last Monday, first anchorage, at an island called Sucia. Busy just working out the how-tos of living on the boat etc.

Beautiful cloud free evening (not a common occurence in the Pacific NW, even for the San Juans).

Glass(plexi) of wine....wife retired early. I read a bit, popped my head out the hatch from time to time as it darkened. Some Persieds should be visible, I thought, so when it was sufficiently dark enough to get a real sense of the night sky (about 10:00), I went up on deck.

Just as I did, a bright streak shot accross the sky east to west, ending in white flash.

As I stood up, and looked directly overhead, I noticed a really bright object traversing NW to SE (in line with the little bay we we moored, actually). It was the ISS, but I could not confirm that until we returned yesterday. I had not seen the ISS for a while, and it seemed a lot more prominent then those previous passes.

After that, I just sat and watched for a while....saw a couple of other meteors, but nothing as dramatic as the one I first saw. At one point I saw three satellites at the same time, two fairly close together in the same orbit going W E, the other NW SE. Near Earth orbits seem to be getting quite crowded.

I really should look up more!!!!!
