Wal-Mart - a close call, I think.

"Wal-Mart quietly pulls dog treats, but no recall."

I've been to a Wal-Mart one time that I can remember. That was this summer, when a bus I had to take stopped there. (The bus ran on Mondays and Fridays from a small town over an hour away. I then rented a car, and drove to a vet.) I was killing time, and I went in.

I went to the dog section, and there I found these very treats. They were about $3 for a pound of what looked to be grilled and then dried and compressed chicken breasts. About 10 of them to a package. They looked good, and though they were labeled for animal use only, I thought they might be OK in an emergency. I routinely count on dog food to be emergency rations. (I didn't need to eat any, though they looked tempting.)

So I bought a package, the one-pound package, not the larger one. I marvelled at how someone, somewhere, could raise 10 chickens, slaughter 'em, cook, press, dehydrate and package the breasts, and then ship them to a Wal-Mart in Yreka, California, to sell for $3. Reminded me a bit of Milo Minderbinder in Catch-22.

Fed 'em to my dog as a treat on the trail. He liked them, would usually eat 'em in preference to his normal lard soaked dog food.

Looks as if there might be a reason they were so cheap.
