Common sense

I've done things like put my gear in front of the door. Where the heck else do you put it? Tapping my feet? If there's music in the bathroom, maybe. Or unconsciously, if I'm in a hurry or late for something. I don't remember, but I do that when I'm just sitting in a chair waiting for something.

Hands and feet drifting into the other stall? Forget it. Maybe if I dropped something important on the floor and it went under, and even then I'd probably ask the other guy to kick it back. I have been forced to reached into an unoccupied neighboring stall for paper once or twice.

Standard male behavior in a public restroom is to wrap your personal space as tightly as possible. Normally, feet are close together in a stall. It's considered creepy even to go up to a urinal next to a guy if there are any other urinals available that aren't next to a guy. Watch sometimes--in an uncrowded restroom, you'll see men leave one free urinal at least between them and anyone else if at all possible.

You find out if a stall with its door closed is occupied by discreetly looking under the door, usually from a distance. Nobody goes up to the door and looks through a crack.

When it comes down to it, the most damning thing against Craig is that almost nobody normal would know anything about these "signals." I sure as heck didn't until this all came up. If Craig were innocent, the first ten minutes of his conversation with the cop would be him just trying to figure out what the hell the cop was talking about.

Jumping right into defense posture doesn't look good.
