Geek Speak

Me big dummy!

What this latest little thing with the backup has made me realize is this-- Many years ago I was on my way to becoming a geek. I knew all the programs and knew some DOS, had done some simple programming, etc. I formatted disks, did all my own maintenance and learned as I went. I set up a complete bookkeeping system in SmartWare (an old software program where the Spreadsheet and Database were interlinked) and programmed it to where I could enter checks into the database file I had created and send it over to the spreadsheet where it formatted itself into a double entry bookkeeping ledger. I programmed all that. Spent hours and hours doing it and had a blast!

Then, along came MS Windows and I got lazy because Windows did everything. It recognized when you attached a new printer and found the drivers needed. I used to download those myself from the program disks and did it for others who were not so knowledgeable. Not needed anymore.

So, what they say is so true: Use it or lose it! Well, I quit using it and I lost it. Crap!

Microsoft, the spawn of the devil! :-) And Excel and Access aren't really that interlinked. Damn, I miss the old SmartWare. It was! If they had only had a really great Word Processing system, maybe they could have competed. But they didn't; it was way simple and not as user friendly as it could have been.

Of course, around the same time, I learned WordPerfect, the best Word Processing software then and probably now. We got an administrator who ordered us to quit using WP and learn MS Word. I should have told him to stick MS Word up where the sun don't shine. It's a piece of shit compared to Word Perfect. I didn't even need menus with WP. I had all the F-key functions memorized and I could do anything with it!

I've learned Access and frankly, I'm not impressed. Excel is OK but the old SmartWare spreadsheet was better.

So now we're all disciples of the devil in the form of Microsoft. 666 = Microsoft!
