Klein is a well-known far-left activist. Her war against capitalism has been going on for several years now. Her "theories" aside, the history of free-market societies vs. collectivist societies is clearly written across over a century of world history.
At this point, anyone who is still applying reason to the issue can draw the obvious conclusions from that data. Klein isn't one of them. She has little intellectual ammunition, although she's a good writer, and when pressed for solutions to these problems, usually bails out on the question, not having thought things through enough to even be pro-communist.
Her examples in this case seem to be scattered and anecdotal, and outweighed by hundreds of times by examples of non-catastrophic growth and prosperity in many nations that adopted mostly free-market principles over many years.
As the final nail in the coffin, if you actually did a real analysis--good luck getting that from this source--I suspect you would find a hell of a lot more examples of catastrophes and social/economic upheavals being used to impose totalitarian/communist solutions than the other way around. The American Depression comes to mind.
