I agree!

Although I can see obvious benefits for the technology (I've often wanted to locate some of my old posts for recycling in other venues!), I fear it would benefit most those who would rather win arguments than those who would rather talk. It's the latter we should be encouraging and empowering, not the former.

Not only would we have everything we say monitored for political correctness, now everything we EVER said would be monitorable for political consistency. And if challenged on some point you made in the past, you would have to break into your discourse and respond. Even if you were able to defend yourself successfully against charges of inconsistency, the thread would nonetheless be hijacked, and the original question reframed.

I prefer a forum where I am allowed to change my mind, stress different aspects of a question, perhaps even be a bit sloppy in my logic, than an academic and pedantic milieu where I had to watch every word I said as well as every word I've ever said. There are already enough alert readers here to catch the chronic bullshitter, we don't need to be on a continuous witch hunt for the occasional slip of the mind.

I would like to think our purpose is to encourage open discussion, not demand precise accountability (other than what we establish through normal conversation and fellowship). I often find myself refraining from posting to certain threads, or initiating my own, because I fear getting bogged down in what I feel is a peripheral discussion irrelevant to my original concern. It wasn't that long ago that one of our frequent posters here started a thread on a non-controversial aspect of a normally controversial topic, and he felt compelled to preface it with a long paragraph explaining that he wasn't looking for a fight. Self-censorship is the first step to total censorship.
