Bin Laden was surprised as anyone when his disciples actually blew themselves up to hit the World Trade Center, that sort of strike was merely rhetorical and par for the rally-the-mindless speeches, while targeting small influential targets that served others needs. Al Qaeda is basically a glorified hirable mercenary group - available to help shift the balance of power and reduce US influence overseas.

Their goal is that TotalFinaElf and their Al Qaeda allies gain control of the rigs. Al Qaeda will then be further funded with millions more Euros and intelligence will be given to them by western corporate and government thugs so that they can strike successfully at US allies - such as this sheik.

With each passing year and the persistance of the US allied government, the more money is spent by rogue euro-elements to equip Al Qaeda and make viable "purchasable terrorist actions".
