The HD DVD wars

The answer has always been so frigging obvious that it's a wonder there aren't a dozen models of these out already.

After all, we're not talking VHS/Beta, where entire tape drive systems are involved. You got a frigging laser that looks at a disk. Almost everything else ought to be software.

I go down to Best Buy now and then and drool over a nice little Sony Blu-Ray/HDTV combo. I swear to God the picture is better than it was on the movie screen. Maybe even better than what the moviemakers used to preview their own work. Watching "Corpse Bride," I watched as dirt specks and even a fingerprint or two flickered on and off on the little puppet models, artifacts not of the DVD but the inevitable process of hand-animation (the same reason the fur on the original King Kong "shimmers.") I wondered if the movie makers ever noticed them.
