A link to a cogent interview with this man, whose version of events seems to match the news coming out of the area.

"For 25 years, author and journalist Ahmed Rashid has covered Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia. Based in Lahore, he is the author of two bestsellers, Taliban and Jihad. He files for English language papers including the International Herald Tribune and The Wall Street Journal."
