Space/Science » in reply to What our galaxy looks like, thanks to Hipparcos

Not hardly.

And I don't mean to disparage the magnificent successes of the Hipparchos mission. As a matter of fact, I have just recently aquired the Millenium Star Atlas, with over a million stars down to about Mag 11. It is a staggering achievemnent, and I can testify to that as an old astrometist who used it do it with glass plates and a measuring engine.

But a 100K parallaxes is just one millionth of the galaxy. We've barely shoved off from the dock.
