So if it melts, it doesn't spell doom for the planet.

A sign that the Northern hemisphere has experienced a warming trend possibly.
What caused that warming trend? My guess is the reduction in emmisions of nitrogen oxide (Smog) due to increased environmental regulation. Thus more sunlight hits the north pole during summer.
The Southern hemisphere has not seen the same effect because it was never as industrialized as the evil polluting USA and USSR.
