There's nothing left of Sputnik-1 of course.
It burned up upon reentry.
Neither is there anything left of the R7 core-stage
and upper-stage, which both burned up as well.
But...the four strap-on boosters of that historic R7 rocket
that orbited the Sputnik-1 impacted in the Kazakhstan desert...
What happened to them?
There's no record of any exhibit or museum in possession of their
mangled remains.
Did the KGB cart them away? and leave them in an obscure
storage facility, where they are to this very day?
Did Kazakhstan scrap-metal scavangers get to them first?
hauling them away to be cut up and melted down in a Soviet-era
"black-market" operation?
There's nothing on Ebay...No momento-items made from the
retrieved metal from the R7s strap-on booster's are to be found
on that website, adding to the mystery.
If someone has any info on this 'unsolved' mystery, please
fill me in.
