Pakistan nuclear chronology
The article's authors are blaming Republicans working in older administrations. It lets the authors run right down the line of Usual Bush Administration Suspects.
While there were real issues of the U.S. looking the other way while Pakistan built its bomb (see some more background here), nobody is talking about how exactly we were supposed to stop Pakistan from building nuclear weapons. Diplomacy, the same way we're not stopping Iran right now? Or maybe bombing their facilities?
I am also fascinated by how "dual use" technology is WMD in one context, and "nothing of the sort" in other contexts. The "steel" mentioned in the article is maraging steel, a low-carbon, high-strength steel that is indeed used in centrifuges, but also has many other industrial uses. Hd we found such steel in Iraq, I doubt it would have been seen as proof of a nuclear system. The "nerve gas precursors" we supposedly sold Iraq were the exact same "non-WMD" chemicals found in abundance near weapons depots when we invaded.
