How could Mars ever have been wet?

The Sun was not as warm as it is now, Mars has always had the mass and density it has now...How is it possible Mars had a thicker atmosphere, way back then?
It's its current mass that demonstrates it could not retain a thick atmosphere...so why could it in the colder past?
