I caught my first glimpse of Comet Holmes tonight, right where the ephemeris said it was! We've had a lot of bad weather here in light-polluted Fort Lauderdale, due to a near miss by Tropical Storm Noel, but it finally went out to sea and a front cleared
up the sky a bit. I first spotted it in 10x50 binoculars, but once I knew where to look, it was an easy naked-eye object, like a faint star at about Mag 3.5. Limiting magnitude tonight is about 4.0. I also observed it with my 100mm f/6 refractor at up to about 100x. A very unusual object, and quite beautiful. A faint star was right next to it, setting it off nicely. Very little detail was visible: a slightly asymmetrical disk, with a bright center for about half the radiius and a fainter outer area, both ending at an abrupt edge. There did not seem to be a gradual diminuition of brightness, just two grey levels, bright and brighter. I think I caught a glimpse of a nucleus, but I can't say for sure.
