Space/Science » in reply to Wondering if the shuttle is visible in full daylight when re-entering

Not even a tiny bit.

At least under normal, preferable circumstance.

STS-120 passed nearly directly overhead at around noon local time at an altitude of about 100,000 feet. Scanning the western sky with my 20/20 and polarized glasses, I couldn't catch a hint of anything. The double-bang of the supersonic shochwave, was clearly heard about 4 min after the overflight was scheduled to happen.
