Just like nobody who calls a Republican president "Hitler" is actually saying he IS Hitler. Not how analogies work, is it?
Fun fact: As of 2012, there were only 22 Jews living in Syria, all of them in an building next to the only synagogue in Damascus. The real irony of this broken analogy is what the average Syrian would think about Jewish refugees.
A more complex analysis might involve comparing the sudden hand-wringing of "progressives" over 1939 Jewish refugees with the typical "progressive" opinions of Israel, where so many Jews actually found refuge from the massive ethnic cleansing around the world, and which the nations around them, including Syria, have marked for extinction.
