Right now the linchpin of electric cars is the maturity of the lithium-ion battery tech. There are still safety issues and others, but they are being licked, and the result could be an efficient car that can be charged far more rapidly than current batteries. More at the GM site.

As the price of normal fuels goes up, this tech is coming out strong.
