In an ideal world, debate is about finding the truth.
In the real world, not so much. The most inflammatory thing you can do in an argument is kick someone's cherished beliefs in the nuts with hard evidence.
Considering I learned years ago that it's a capital mistake to prove you're right in an argument with your wife, it's surprising this took me so long to figure out in other contexts.
