re: cultural relativism

I don't see why you're in such an uproar, I agree with you. I am not a cultural relativist, I do believe some cultures are no damn good and deserve to be wiped out. But I also believe there is great variation within cultures. There are subcultures right here in America that are positively loathesome. Whether we should take it upon ourselves to systematically eliminate these aberrations, is another matter altogether. What I meant to communicate is that cultures who condone things like honor rapes and genital mutilations also like to fly airliners into other people's office buildings, and train 12 year olds into suicide bombers.

Cultural and racial genocide is something the Germans practiced in the 40's against the Jews, and we practiced in the 19th century against the Indians. This does not make either us or the Germans candidates for extinction, and Christian Europeans don't exactly have a clean record in this area historically, either. We've also seen outbreaks of it in the Balkans late in the last century. But what is going on in Africa and the Mid East now is barbaric. Cultural relativism is fine for clothing styles and food seasoning, but not when people are being killed because they break some cultural superstition.
