Inexpensive, home-made screen protector for touch-screen items

I either lost or had my Cingular 8525 stolen, at any rate it was gone. Waited a week to see if it was REALLY gone, called the cell phone insurance company. They whined, replaced it on a one time only basis.

The screen on my old one was getting worn, smudged, that sort of thing. I decided to not let that happen again if I could help it.

Looking around my desk I noticed some transparent tape, of the Scotch variety. Too narrow, might do in a pinch, however. Looking farther I found some transparent packing tape which was as wide as my screen.

I carefully applied a strip, trimmed the edges, and it seems to work. I can see very well, responds to touch well.

This is probably so obvious that it's old news. Or there's some fatal defect, the glue will rot clear through to the battery or something. But on the surface (a little play on words) it seems like a good idea.
