I indulged my curiosity about Second Life (stimulated by this thread) for a couple of hours last night. Didn't sign up, but explored the FAQ and clicked on a couple of "sponsored links". One led me to a monthly fashion magazine (available as a PDF download) convincingly produced "in context". The feature articles were on cyberpunk and steampunk fashion (there are, apparently, a number of "islands" with those themes), complete with full-page spreads of virtual models wearing the creations of the burgeoning SL fashion industry... creations including hi-rez skin textures, eye colors and body shapes as well as hair, clothes, and accessories.
Said to myself (and to Jody in an email): If at least one of the two of us were a code geek, we could make a virtual fortune doing hair and jewelry. And y'know... we've got some code geeks here, and some artistically creative types, sometimes the same person. We've also got some engineers, and gadgets appear to be on the SL popularity list.
Maybe the Habitable Zone should establish a collective beachhead in Second Life?
Another thing the FAQ mentioned: A surprisingly large number of genuine institutions of higher learning with SL presence.
