I pull up to Three Forks Arizona after a several hour drive. I take the H3 and plow through wisps of post-midnight traffic.
I follow the directions I had received on the cell phone a few hours earlier. Yes, the moon collector would be open tonight, but there would not be as much light because of the slim crescent moon.
I get off the freeway to Tucson and drive on a lonely road for what appears to be about forty minutes. A small sign on the side of the road designates that I have arrived. A small shack in the distance is visible and beyond that the array of mirrors sits imposingly, yet silent in a man-made crater.
"You here for the moon rays?"
"Yep. I called earlier for directions."
"Oh yeah, you're the one."
"That's me. Is it all set up?"
"Yeah, you see that spot there. You can sit or stand there for fifteen minutes if you like. We limit it to fifteen minutes because we want to let others get a chance to use it."
"Not too big a crowd tonight I see."
"Yeah, last visitor was about two hours ago. If you're going to strip off your clothes or something, let us know and we will wait in the shack. We want folks to be comfortable while there here. By the way we accept donations if you feel so inclined."
I pull a twenty out of my alligator skin wallet. I figure pay more, get more time.
"Yeah, privacy would be great"
"No problem."
I keep thinking "What would Lindy do if she were here" as I walk down the man made crater and in front of the large mirror array.
I slip out of my pants, loosen my tie and unbutton my shirt. I pull off my shoes and socks. I get rid of all my undergarments and walk into the light.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHAAAA.
The rays feel like magic. The moonlight is magnified and focused. I wonder what wave lengths are added to mix of sunlight as it bounces off the lunar dust. I begin to chant a native-american song my native co-worker taught me one time and dance in place. I'm bouncing around under the moonlight. Then I suddenly look up at the mirrors - I see stars.
"My god it's full of stars!"
The stars are like billion candles flickering in the silent night.
I dance around some more. I turn and let the rays fall on my back. I sing some more. I almost wished I had some illness that needed treatment to maximize the benefits. Instead I simply praised Diana the Hunter and make circles in the Arizona dust. I feel at one with tribes that called this land home. I could see the Conquistadors trapsing over the land looking for gold. All the beasts of the desert are at one with me.
I look at my watch and see a full ten minutes have elapsed. I put my clothes back on and I feel like a new person. I have to share this wonderful experience with Lindy and the other Zoners. Art should come on down here and it's not that far for Alcaray either. Everyone should get a chance, once in their lives, to bathe naked in the moonlight for 20 bucks.
As I walk back to my car and away from the mirror I button my shirt and I feel the sand of the ages pass under my feet. This spot is sacred, hallowed land. The moon beams are even healing the soil and the insects in the soil. I pass another soul who looks eager to get his time in. He looks familiar.
"Pardon me aren't you..."
"yes, I'm Jerry Brown."
He walks past without even slowing down. I start up the H3 and put her in gear. The stars guide me back and Diana and I now have shared a secret moment together, a dance in the night.
;-)
Thanks Lindy!
