Romney went out of his way to draw lines.

Specifically, he threw out that old bone about the "secularist religion", which is a thinly veiled attack on people who believe there is no God. And I quote:

But in recent years, the notion of the separation of church and state has been taken by some well beyond its original meaning. They seek to remove from the public domain any acknowledgment of God. Religion is seen as merely a private affair with no place in public life. It is as if they are intent on establishing a new religion in America – the religion of secularism. They are wrong.

The founders proscribed the establishment of a state religion, but they did not countenance the elimination of religion from the public square. We are a nation 'Under God' and in God, we do indeed trust.

We should acknowledge the Creator as did the Founders – in ceremony and word. He should remain on our currency, in our pledge, in the teaching of our history, and during the holiday season, nativity scenes and menorahs should be welcome in our public places. Our greatness would not long endure without judges who respect the foundation of faith upon which our constitution rests. I will take care to separate the affairs of government from any religion, but I will not separate us from 'the God who gave us liberty'.

"We should acknowledge the Creator"??? Oh, thank you for telling me I am expected to take part in worship services in order to be part of the people's government. Thank you for telling me that I must either embrace hypocrisy or embrace a god in which I don't believe in order to be included in your vision of America.

Obama used a lot of Gospel references. He didn't tell me I had to worship anyone. And honestly, I like Jesus. I don't think he was a deity, but he was a terrific ethicist. We need a little less worship and a little more ethics in this country.

Now, I don't know whether I'd vote for Obama were I registered as a Democrat. I have local races to vote in coming up in the primary that will be better served by my vote as a Republican, so I'll have to give this one a pass. Besides, with the primary season structured the way it is, Pennsylvania might be beside the point by that time. My question for myself is whether to vote for the person I would find least objectionable or to go ahead and vote for Huckabee, because I think he'd get his head handed to him in a general election.
