Dark matter seems to be basically heuristic, existing in the minds of physicists as a fast, cheap and easy way to explain the inexplicable. And it may well be correct, though it has raised more questions than created answers. One wonders how so much work has uncovered so much detail if dark matter doesn't exist. For instance, I read once of the ratio of dark matter to dark energy.
However, other explanations which explain the same observations without doing violence to physics and nature as we know it should be welcome, and this is one. I read a different article a few weeks ago, apparently about the same theorists.
Personally, I hope there is another, less mysterious explanation than dark matter/energy. While dark/matter energy could be superstrings in an unresolved form, or something like that, I'm more comfortable hoping physics is on the correct path to explaining all of it.
