There's a subtle difference.

A mountain top is not something new. Mount Everest was going to be like other mountain tops only colder and with thinner atmosphere.

Going to the moon to explore a new landscape, exploring unexplored oceans, or ocean depths or the frozen unexplored poles has more merit in my eyes. To perform a feat just because it is difficult and no one else has done so enters that "world record" mentality that is more all about self than selflessness.

Courage is better demonstrated when it benefits all mankind. His example only spurred other glory-hounds, something he disliked, but that was the problem with his accomplishment - it was more about glory than exploration - more about personal accomplishment than adding to mankind's knowledge.

Sort of a "I can kick nature's butt" attitude. And when he was lauded, others wanted the attention and ego rewards too, even if they had to sacrifice others along the way.

I know, it's a fine line of distinction. But the others you mentioned did more for mankind in my eyes.
