Space/Science » in reply to Obama Flip Flops On Space Exploration

Hmmm....

What I read sounded pretty generic, the usual words and phrases to basically endorse the status quo, except for weapons in space. The opening paragraph takes the classic "spinoffs" approach, and none of the platform really talks about space exploration as valuable for its own sake, only in terms of consequential benefits here on Earth.

I'm generally leaning toward Obama, and his previous anti-NASA stance was a nasty fly in the ointment. This new position of tepid support helps, and I think that somebody in the Obama campaign woke up to the reality that the same political forces that screw up NASA also protect it. The political dynamic is pretty clear: Few people object to NASA's existence, and quite a few people, like us, have grown rather fond of the old bureaucratic beast. In political terms you can only lose trying to throw NASA off the lifeboat.

Realpolitik. NASA will survive.
