An offset center of gravity on a space capsule allows a "lifting reentry" trajectory. By coming in at a slight angle of attack instead of straight in, a capsule can reduce G-loads and control its trajectory to some extent. Apollo did this. Such a capsule heats more on one side of the shield than the other.
