I'll go first:
In the late '90s I was CTO of this little Web startup whose mission was to put a large and renowned library of early Christian documents online. CEO was the archive's curator. I was jazzed not only by the technical challenges, but by the intellectual nature of the site--this was for scholars and academics and intellectual lay people. Things went pretty well for several months.
Then one day the CEO called a staff meeting, and got right to the point: "Do you believe that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior?" I was poleaxed, because up until that moment the premise of the business had been entirely secular--I thought I was building a library, not a church. We went around the table, and it was mostly "Hosannas!" and "Hallelujahs!"...and my "sorry, I'm agnostic" landed on the table like a big stinking turd. I was out the door posthaste.
Well. It was a business with a religious premise, after all, and the question of religious discrimination seemed more than a little murky because of that. I was philosophical about it.
Postscript: I found out later that the site was finished by a team of Southern Baptist Web designers who'd moved here en masse from some place like Alabama, and apparently were willing to work cheap as an act of religious devotion. I wonder if I could've stayed on if I'd taken a pay cut?
Who's next? It might be cathartic ;-)
