In order to become a spacefaring civilization, we need a heavy lift launcher. One that can loft 150-200 tons into orbit. The ability to live off the land will require some basic infrastructure be put into place. That infrastructure consists of equipment that is bulky, heavy, and which can operate for years on end with little maintenance. The Ares V is a move in the right direction, IMO.
