Check out the milage of large trucks rolling down the highway. They don't spew black smoke anymore; however, that has come at the cost of a substantial fuel efficiency penalty as additional fuel must be burned to increase combustion tempatures in the exhaust treatment process.
Trucks today get roughly 20% worse milage than those produced just 2 years ago thanks to new EPA rules.
