The Osage Indians.

I was reading one of my kids books on Indians (Published in 1974) I came across the Osage Indians.

They had a fascinating social structure. They were called the Children of the Middle Waters. Their village was divided into two groups- The Sky People and the Earth People. There was a Sky Chief and an Earth Chief. They had equal power, but the Sky chief ruled in times of peace and the Earth Chief ruled in times of War.

The village had a main street. On the north side was the Earth People. The south side had the Sky People. Across from each other, on main street, were both chief’s huts.

I did not know this until yesterday. Its sad that few American know the rich history of our lands.

With all the talk about Water, Earth and Sky, I was reminded of a show my son likes to watch, called Avatar. I wonder if the show's creators knew something about the Osages? (Avatar is a well written show BTW).
