Claim of alien cells in rain may fit historical accounts: study

A conÂtroÂverÂsial theÂoÂry, that strange red rains in InÂdia six years
ago might have conÂtained miÂcrobes from outÂer space, hasÂn’t died.
In fact, things might be getÂting even weirder.
A new study sugÂgests the claimed conÂnecÂtion beÂtween scarÂlet
rain and tiÂny ceÂlesÂtial visÂiÂtors may be conÂsistÂent with hisÂtorÂiÂcal
acÂcounts linkÂing colÂored rain to meÂteÂor passÂings. These would
seem to echÂo the InÂdia case, in which orÂganÂisms are proÂposed
to have fallÂen out of a breakÂing meÂteÂor.
“Some of these [past] acÂcounts may have been exÂagÂgerÂatÂed,â€
cauÂtioned the new stuÂdy’s auÂthor in reÂportÂing his findÂings,
adding that conÂsiÂderÂable probÂlems also dog the alien-cell proÂpoÂsal.
Yet the hisÂtorÂiÂcal analÂyÂsis, he conÂcludÂed, shows the quesÂtion is
“much more comÂplex than one might have exÂpectÂed†and “should
be inÂvesÂtÂiÂgated with eveÂry sciÂenÂtifÂic reÂsource†availÂaÂble.
The stuÂdy, by docÂtorÂal stuÂdent PatÂrick McÂCafÂferty of Queen’s
UnÂiversÂity BelÂfast, is pubÂlished in the adÂvance onÂline ediÂtion
of the InÂternaÂtÂional JourÂnal of AsÂtroÂbiÂolÂoÂgy.
