re: the roads

You think the NRDC is all about making sure the roads are built and paid for? I'm seeing something else there.

That aside, gas taxes work fairly well for this now, and maybe one non-intrusive way of working it when cars change to electric would be a dedicated meter on the house for cars that has a tax associated with it. That raises hacking issues, but it's a place to start, and wouldn't require tracking cars. I could also live with a mileage meter on the car that got read (without tracking systems) once a month like your house meter.

Or maybe we just need to move toward more toll road applications on major roads. Even ones run by governments (my local streets and roads mostly come out of other taxes now).

Now, if you go to something like automatic toll taking and billing (like on the bridges around here), we're back to tracking privacy issues again if there are a lot of toll locations. Oddly, I haven't heard any complaints about this issue from local people who use this. If anyone does use "Fast Track" or whatever it's called, I would like to hear their opinions on the privacy issues. It is voluntary (you can still pay a cash toll), which I see as a large factor in reducing these concerns. Would that still be possible with many toll roads?
