There are some areas like 501(c)(3)'s that have played a little fast and loose with this across the political spectrum.
The best way to deal with campaign contributions is to get rid of the silly politically-motivated restrictions, and instead severely tighten up the rules on full disclosure at all levels, instituting complete transparency. Every dollar should be able to be tracked back to whoever wrote the checks. No more "Committees for Public Goodness and the Preservation of Warm Puppies" or 527s that get back-door cash from special interests of all shapes and sizes.
