My sister had COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and severe asthma. She couldn't tolerate even being around smokers or perfumes, any chemical odors. They would create an allergic reaction which resulted in asthma attacks, any of which could have killed her. My niece was a smoker and bitched because she couldn't smoke in my sister's house when they came for Thanksgiving or whatever. I did my best to imprint on her that being around even second-hand smoke could kill my sister. But she just poo-poo'ed it.
A sound piece of advice for the welfare of your children: DO NOT LET THAT WOMAN TAKE THEM EVER AGAIN! Even is she doesn't smoke, her car will reek of it; her house will reek of it; her clothes will reek of it. And any of that could cause a reaction in your children.
Oh, the niece who poo-pooed my sister's problem--she now has asthma and can't be around smoke. I'd say it was justice except I do love my niece.
Good luck with your kids. Any chance they'll outgrow it? I know with some kids, they do. I pray so. It's a rough road to walk.
